Return-to-School Update for Mount Vernon Dual Immersion School

August 6, 2020

Dear Parents, Families, and Friends of Mount Vernon School,

I am writing with an update about the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

  • Our first day of school for students is now August 26th
  • All students will begin in a full distance learning phase (virtual) due to the fact that San Diego County is still on the State’s monitoring list for excessive COVID19 infection rates.
  • We will provide a 4-week advance notice to families, when it is safe to return to in-person instruction at the school site.
  • The district is prepared to provide a Chromebook for EVERY Lemon Grove student!
  • We are also able to facilitate home internet access if you do not currently have access to the internet.
  • We will not be providing “packets” of worksheets as the mode of instruction for the 2020-21 school year. Using a computer device is essential.

Your school principal will be reaching out soon with more specific details on the preparations for returning to school. The district will also offer a series of webinars for parents to understand how the launch of school and distance learning will look.

School Leadership Update

As we prepare for the opening of the 2020-2021 school year, I am excited to announce that Mr. Tomas Chavez has been selected as the new Principal of Mount Vernon School. He is looking forward to welcoming our Mount Vernon Mustangs back for another outstanding year of growth and engagement in spanish language learning and deepening our IB cultural knowledge. Our vision is to inspire and empower lifelong learners by addressing their academic, social, and emotional needs, and we are so excited Principal Chavez will be at the helm of this work for the new year. He is uniquely qualified to lead Mount Vernon towards it’s goal of strengthening the Dual Language and International Baccalaureate programs and reinvigorating the school community by attracting new students. We will accomplish this worthy goal by placing a high value on diversity, rigor, and building positive relationships between the school and our students and families.

Mr. Tomas Chavez grew up in the Lemon Grove community, he graduated from Morse High School and received his teaching credential, administrative credential, and Masters in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University.  Mr. Chavez began his career in education as a middle school math and science teacher at EJE Academies Charter School, a dual immersion school in El Cajon.  He then transitioned into various roles supporting teachers and staff that included Instructional Coach, Data & Assessment Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Principal.  Mr. Chavez was the founding principal of Imagine Schools Riverside County, a dual immersion bilingual charter school that serves the Hemet and San Jacinto community.

As a collaborative and servant school leader, Mr. Chavez has three basic principles: 1) put students first, 2) serve the needs of the community, 3) foster a welcoming and positive environment for our students and families.  He aspires to a school culture of high expectations that celebrates diversity and multiculturalism.

We look forward to supporting Principal Chavez and the entire Mount Vernon family in preparation for a wonderful 2020-2021 school year. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Chavez to our special community. You can reach Mr. Chavez via email at or via phone at the school office (619) 825-5613.

You can connect with him on the Mount Vernon School Class Dojo communication platform. Please register - it is how we will communicate with you in the 2020-21 school year!
